Madrid: Philips to light up Atletico’s stadium It might not have a roof yet, but Atletico’s new stadium already has contractor for the roof’s lighting system. Philips will equip Estadio la Peineta with LED floodlighting.

It’s been negotiated for over half a year and is now finally signed. The deal between Atletico de Madrid and Dutch company Philips will see the latter provide all of the main lighting system at Estadio la Peineta. This partnership was approved just before Atletico played PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, a rival much-connected to Philips.

The stadium in Madrid will utilize an increasingly common LED lighting system, which is cost- and energy-efficient. The contract doesn’t only include the field’s floodlight, but also the stadium’s illumination, both centered around its massive membrane canopy.

Currently the Madrid stadium has all of the seating bowl in place and majority of the steel ring on top (the aerial photo is 2 weeks old, thus presents a smaller portion of the ring in place). This structure will give support to the roof.

Though previously hoped to be ready in 2016, the new home of “Atleti” won’t be open until mid-2017.
