Mexico: Another major stadium in Monterrey? Current champions of Mexico might follow their local rivals and build a new stadium in upcoming years. There are two options on the table, both seem impressive.

Recent months saw one impressive stadium opened in the Monterrey area, Estadio BBVA Bancomer. New home of “Rayados” (CF Monterrey) prompted questions about construction for their local rivals, UANL Tigres.

Current champions of Mexico are now said to have two options on the table. One of them might see a stadium built in railyards near Estadio Universitario, accompanied by a shopping development and possibly even racing track.

Another option is building the stadium near or even atop the riverbed of Santa Catarina River. In each location the new venue might accommodate up to 70,000 people and cost some $500 million.

At this point none of the proposals has any renderings revealed, which is exactly why we’re illustrating the plans with a 2008 rendering of a different stadium also planned to be placed atop the Santa Catarina riverbed (by Populous).
