It’s been a decade since plans for a new football stadium in Zurich were on the table. And still the impasse continues. A group of stadium enthusiasts decided to suggest some options…
Not many people outside Switzerland recall that initially Zurich was supposed to host Euro 2008 at the new Hardturm. However, a new pentagonal stadium was abandoned after citizens opposed its construction. Letzigrund stepped in, but the idea of a new football-specific stadium in Zurich wasn’t scrapped altogether.
A few attempts followed in recent years, last one failed to attract public support in 2013’s referendum. Though a private alternative is sought, there’s still no solid plan of bringing football to its home again after the 2007 closing of old Hardturm.
In this atmosphere a group of Skyscrapercity.com messageboard users decided to host an internal competition dedicated to creating the best new Hardturm. Each proposal had to be fitted into the actual Hardturm plot in Zurich and propose a stadium of 18,000-25,000 seats.
Since yesterday 9 competition entries are available for public review online. Below we present one rendering of each concept (in alphabetic order, by nickname) and encourage our readers to check the detailed presentations in competition vote thread!
