Scotland took on Ireland at Celtic Park, the temporary venue for international games during works at Hampden Park. The game enjoyed a capacity crowd of 59,239 people, who were in celebratory mood after their team scored the game’s only goal in 75th minute.

Unfortunately, tragedy unfolded in the eastern upper tier, where 22-year-old Nathan McSeveney fell 3 floors down a concrete staircase. The fan was immediately taken to hospital with critical injuries, but rescue efforts proved futile.

Police are investigating the accident, but it’s not considered suspicious at this time. A statement posted on the Celtic club website this morning said: "Everyone at Celtic Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the death of a young supporter following last night's match between Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.

"This was a terrible, tragic incident and our sincere thoughts and prayers are with the young man's family at this time."

Parkhead is due to host Scotland’s friendly against England on Tuesday night.
