Zurich: Football stadium to be built after all? In an unexpected move both Zurich-based clubs yesterday presented their vision to the city council. FC Zurich and Grasshopper Club want to have a new stadium, built in cooperation with Halter AG developers.

Third time’s the charm? Derby rivals FC Zurich and Grasshopper Club stand together as they present their newest plan for a football-specific stadium in Zurich.

First attempt failed years back, before Euro 2008. Then on September 22 this year citizens rejected the idea of public financing for a new ground replacing the demolished Hardturm.

Now the vision sees no public spending planned, which seems to be its biggest advantage. FCZ and GC teamed up with Halter AG developers who are to build apartments and offices on the spot that once was Hardturm Stadion. This should provide required financing for a new stadium.

Its location is unclear. One option is Altstetten, north-western district of Zurich, not far from current home of the teams, Letzigrund. The other is Dubensdorf, an independent municipality outside Zurich, but with a decent rail and road connection.

Both concepts are to be analysed by their respective municipalities as the clubs and Halter plan to spend CHF 15 million on planning. Should the scheme go ahead with either location, offices and apartments should be ready in 2018 and the stadium in 2020.
