Brazil: Workers could have died? Construction halted in Curitiba Labour tribunal ordered for the site to be abandoned until safe working conditions are created. This decision comes as another hit for Curitiba's Arena da Baixada, one of five most delayed projects of 2014 World Cup.

October started with very bad news for Atletico Paranaense, who already had to downscale their Arena da Baixada plans as delays were growing. The club postponed the installation of retractable roof until after the 2014 World Cup in an attempt to meet FIFA deadlines and deliver the revamped stadium.

And though work still is behind schedule, the delay will only grow in upcoming days after labour tribunal judge Lorena Colnago ordered evacuation of the construction site. "Countless infractions have been committed, in various stages of the building process," the judge from Brazil's labour tribunal said.

She said workers were in danger of "being buried, run over and of collision, falling from heights and being hit by construction material, among other serious risks".

The site will now have to be examined in terms of safety before works can resume. It's not clear how long that may take. With a race against time to meet the very last date set by FIFA (end of 2013), chances of Arena da Baixada being ready get thinner every day. Photos below show current state of the project (28/09).
