Panathinaikos may be the club with most titles in various disciplines, but its current position in the Super League is far poorer than one would expect. The team may not even qualify for European tournaments next season as they’re mid-tabled at the moment and facing massive financial crisis.

The extent of problems was revealed recently as head of stadium management team at the Athens Olympic Stadium suggested PAO should consider dropping floodlights and switching to daytime fixtures. It turns out the club hasn’t been paying bills for quite a while and owes the stadium significant amounts.

As fixtures are set based on TV schedule, though, it seems Panathinaikos may become victims of their own popularity. The club is one of two most recognized nationwide and their games have to be played in prime time – after dusk.

This means a relocation back to their old stadium may become only option. The club is reported to already start preparations for the move, adjusting their previous venue to accept the club back.
