Stadion Pod Obzidjem – stadium description

Thanks to its location on the edge of a high cliff on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, near the historic city center, the intimate football facility in Piran is considered one of the most picturesque stadiums in Europe.

The facility is equipped with an artificial turf pitch, which is slightly smaller than the standard size – 100×64 m. On the north side, there is a low stand with seating. Six lighting masts have also been installed alongside the pitch.

The stadium is equipped with the necessary social facilities, and there are also two small playing fields and a modest sports hall next to it.

An additional attraction are the city walls, which are located behind the western goal. Part of these walls are characteristic towers from which it is possible to observe the panorama of Piran.

The section of the city walls next to the stadium was built at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, during the third phase of the fortification's expansion. It is the newest and best-preserved section of Piran's defensive walls.

Their name in Slovenian is “Piransko obzidje” – hence the name of the stadium, “Stadion Pod Obzidjem” which means “stadium under the city walls”.

On the other side, behind the eastern goal, there is a cemetery. An interesting fact is that at the foot of the steep cliff on which the stadium stands, there is a rocky beach where naturists sunbathe.

The stadium is home to the local team, NK Portorož Piran, which plays in the lower, amateur leagues. The club was founded in 1998, replacing the former NK Piran, which had existed since 1925.
