The transformation of the Anoeta Stadium continues to progress with new demolition and construction work on the stands–efforts that will increase the venue’s capacity and modernize the VIP areas. An important step toward hosting the 2030 World Cup.

The project moves forward
There are still many uncertainties regarding the 2030 World Cup in the Euskadi. Bilbao wants it, but not at any cost; San Sebastián is also hesitant, with the mayor stating that the decision would have both negative and positive consequences.
Last month, the Basque country presented a new proposal: a joint bid in which the two stadiums would serve as a single venue. Everything remains to be decided.
Despite the uncertainty, expansion work on Anoeta began in May and is progressing at a good pace. The changes won’t be major, but they are necessary to comply with FIFA regulations, which require venues with at least 40,000 seats to host the World Cup. Currently, the San Sebastián stadium has a capacity of 39,500 spectators, and once the work is completed, it will have a capacity of 42,427.
The main component of the project involves creating a new tier in the two side stands–an expansion that will allow for the addition of several rows of seats at the top of the stadium. This modification will require reorganizing the areas designated for the press and will entail the creation of new spaces for the media, located in a more central position within this third level of seating.

Current renovation works
Currently, prefabricated elements have already been installed in the upper corners, where the video scoreboards were previously located; these will be slightly relocated. New seats will also be added to the upper sections of the two end stands, making use of spaces that had previously remained unused.
Meanwhile, work is also underway to dismantle and demolish part of the existing stands in the upper and lower tiers. In addition, other projects are being carried out around the stadium, such as the comprehensive renovation of the nearby Topo de Anoeta station, which includes the construction of a new concourse (whose structure has already been completed), the renovation of the existing one, and the extension of the platform.
The project is expected to cost around 10 million euros and is scheduled to be completed by late August or early September. For this reason, Real Sociedad has also asked LaLiga to schedule its first three matches as away games, a change that has been reflected in the team’s calendar.
