The largest stadium in the Netherlands?

The historic Philips Stadium in Eindhoven, where the club has played its matches for over a century, has been awaiting an expansion for years–an expansion that is now becoming a reality. In March of this year, the project of the renovation of the PSV stadium was announced; its concept was developed in collaboration with Sweco. It involves the construction of additional structural elements around the outer perimeter of the stadium, which will increase its size. The expansion of the stands will also involve the construction of an entirely new roof.

The new tier of stands will significantly increase the number of available seats for fans. The stadium’s final capacity has not yet been confirmed, but it is estimated to range from 52,000 to 58,500 spectators, with some seats likely to be standing room only. If the stadium can accommodate more than 56,000 people, it will surpass the Johan Cruyff Arena and become the largest stadium in the Netherlands.

Contractor and new management selected

The club is eager for the expansion to begin as early as next year so that, according to plans, the stadium will be fully ready by 2030, and has therefore already taken steps toward this goal. Last Friday, PSV announced the selection of the firm that will handle the construction of the facility–Bouwers Met Visie, known as BMV, which had already collaborated on the visualizations. Earlier, the club had announced the selection of new directors for Philips Stadium.

As for BMV, it is not a company specializing in stadiums, but its proximity (it is located in Veldhoven, near Eindhoven) and its impact on the Brainport Eindhoven region–ranging from the construction of ordinary apartments to technologically advanced facilities–were key factors in the club’s decision. Furthermore, the collaboration between the two parties is not intended to end with the construction of the stadium but is set to last at least ten years, aligning with the club’s plan for, as they state, innovation, sustainability, and relations with the region. Speaking about BMV, stadium director Sjors Van den Boogart said, The fact that they are committing to working with us for ten years underscores the trust and shared ambition to create something lasting.

These were among Van den Boogart’s first remarks in his new role. Until recently, Marcel Brands was the sole director overseeing the facility, but last week the club announced that he would be joined by the aforementioned Boogart and Jaap Van Baar. These two men are by no means strangers to the club. Jaap Van Baar had previously served as chief financial officer, while Boogart had been performing his current role on an unofficial basis. Expanding the board with figures familiar with the club is intended to enable the club to make administrative decisions more quickly and easily.
