Germany: Elversberg prepares its modest stadium for the Bundesliga SV Elversberg is preparing its modest Stadion an der Kaiserlinde for Bundesliga requirements. Thanks to a temporary exemption from the DFL, the club can play in a 10,000-capacity venue for now, but the ongoing expansion is set to raise capacity to 15,500 and bring the stadium fully in line with league regulations by spring 2027.

Stadion an der Kaiserlinde granted a Bundesliga licence despite its limited capacity

Even before the end of last season, SV Elversberg secured a licence to compete in both the 2. Bundesliga and the Bundesliga. That was possible thanks to an earlier decision by the DFL, which had already taken into account the club's promotion bid during the licensing process.

Despite receiving approval, Ursapharm-Arena still falls short of one of the league's key requirements. The stadium currently holds around 10,000 spectators, while Bundesliga regulations require a minimum capacity of 15,000. As a result, SV Elversberg has been granted a temporary exemption by the DFL, valid until spring 2027, when the most important phases of the stadium expansion are expected to be completed.

The new stand at Stadion an der Kaiserlinde will offer greater capacity and unique hospitality areas

The centrepiece of the project is the construction of a new north stand, which will significantly transform the stadium. Once completed, capacity will increase to around 15,500, allowing Ursapharm-Arena to meet Bundesliga requirements without relying on special exemptions. The new stand will also include approximately 1,500 seats for away supporters, with a dedicated security area located above the visiting section.

Construction is progressing in phases. In mid-July, crews began pouring the final section of the stand's concrete foundation slab. Earlier, work had been temporarily suspended due to extreme temperatures approaching 40°C, making concrete operations unsafe. Stadium officials insist that despite the brief interruption, the overall construction schedule remains on track.

One of the stand's most distinctive features will be the new Field Lounges—premium hospitality spaces located directly beside the pitch. Guests will be able to watch matches from almost pitch level while enjoying an extensive food and beverage service. The concept is expected to become one of the most distinctive hospitality offerings in the Bundesliga.

SV Elversberg has already attracted attention for its innovative VIP section in the west stand, where guests receive catering directly at their seats. The concept was well received by the DFL and has even been granted patent protection.

SV Elversberg stadium modernisation will improve conditions for media and players

Promotion to the Bundesliga also means greater demand from broadcasters and journalists. To meet those requirements, the new stand will feature a modern media centre and additional workspaces for reporters.

Camera facilities will also be expanded. Bundesliga regulations require more camera positions and greater distances between cameras and the pitch than in the 2. Bundesliga. The top division also requires twice as many media workstations as Germany's second tier. Until the new facilities are completed, some operations continue to be housed in temporary modular buildings serving as dressing rooms and technical areas.

The new north stand will provide much more than additional seating. At pitch level, it will house new dressing rooms for both teams, expanded coaching facilities and dedicated areas for match officials. SV Elversberg's first-team dressing room alone will cover around 80 square metres—almost as much space as the club's entire previous dressing-room complex. The plans also include a dedicated office for the head coach and a large tactical meeting room for the coaching staff.

Infrastructure around Stadion an der Kaiserlinde is also being expanded

The redevelopment extends beyond the stadium itself. The club is also investing in transport infrastructure around Ursapharm-Arena. Alongside the existing 800-space car park, another facility with capacity for around 500 vehicles is under construction. In addition, a new Park & Ride site offering approximately 1,000 parking spaces has already been introduced, with shuttle buses connecting supporters to nearby railway stations. Although Elversberg does not have its own railway station, the club says the current transport system is working efficiently and can comfortably handle growing attendances.

SV Elversberg's stadium redevelopment could exceed €30 million

While the club has not officially disclosed the project's financial details, the overall investment is estimated at between €30 million and €40 million. Most of the work is being carried out by companies based in Saarland, a decision the club says helps maintain both construction quality and the pace of the project.

The immediate priority is completing all facilities required for players, referees and the media. That will allow Bundesliga matches to be staged even if parts of the new stand are not yet open to supporters. Club officials stress that the redevelopment is designed not only to meet current DFL regulations but also future requirements. The project incorporates the latest standards for safety, crowd management, hospitality areas and media infrastructure.

Once completed, Ursapharm-Arena an der Kaiserlinde is expected to become one of Germany's most innovative football stadiums. With its expanded capacity, modern architecture, pitchside hospitality lounges and upgraded sporting facilities, the venue is intended to provide a long-term Bundesliga home for the smallest town ever represented in Germany's top flight.
