In recent years, Sporting CP has continued to invest heavily in upgrading its home stadium. During the 2025/26 season, the most significant change was the removal of the moat that separated supporters from the pitch. The project had long been one of the club's fans' main demands and was delivered as part of the Estádio José Alvalade 2.0 initiative.

The project was designed by Spanish architect Salvador Alonso, who argued that the moat created both a physical and emotional barrier between supporters and the action on the field. Its removal brought the stands closer to the pitch, improving the matchday atmosphere and strengthening the connection between fans and players. Alonso also highlighted the practical advantages of the change. The moat complicated pitch maintenance and created additional operational challenges. Its removal has made the stadium easier to manage while also improving the overall spectator experience.

The second phase of the redevelopment is now underway. Images shared by supporters show construction work concentrated mainly in the seating areas. Several rows of seats in the East Stand have already been removed to make room for new premium hospitality spaces.

New premium areas aim to transform the matchday experience

The new facilities are designed to offer a higher level of service while expanding the stadium's ability to host corporate and business events. Sporting plans to introduce new hospitality boxes alongside an exclusive area known as the Emerald Lounge, aimed at premium clients, sponsors and supporters seeking a more upscale experience.

The lounge will be located behind the new hospitality sectors. According to the club, the project will provide a level of comfort well beyond that offered by traditional stadium seating. Sporting hopes the new concept will appeal both to commercial partners and to supporters looking for a different way to experience matches.

Construction is also progressing on a new area called Lion's Corner, located in the corner between the West and South Stands. Sporting describes the project as a lounge space unlike anything currently available at Portuguese football stadiums. The goal is to combine the atmosphere of a football match with premium hospitality services, creating a new type of matchday experience.

Salvador Alonso believes modern stadiums must cater to a variety of audiences. In his view, sports venues can no longer rely solely on matchdays and must attract visitors throughout the year.

Sporting wants the stadium to become a year-round destination

The current redevelopment also includes upgrades to several internal areas of Estádio José Alvalade. Work is being carried out in food and beverage facilities as well as restroom areas in the South Stand. Plans also include the installation of a new panoramic lift designed to improve accessibility and enhance the stadium's appeal as a tourist attraction.

Sporting's leadership hopes these investments will transform the venue into a year-round activity hub. The club aims to expand its non-matchday business, attract more commercial events and increase visitor numbers outside the football calendar. With football matches occupying only a small portion of the annual schedule, creating flexible spaces capable of hosting conferences, corporate functions, family events and other activities has become an increasingly important objective for modern stadium operators.
