Halifax was set to become a temporary home for the Giants

The proposed purchase of the stadium by the Super League club was approved by Calderdale Council in March 2025. The Shay is currently home to Halifax Panthers and FC Halifax Town. Huddersfield Giants owner Ken Davy was interested in acquiring the ground primarily as a temporary home for the club while plans for a new stadium in Huddersfield are developed. While fans wait for important infrastructure decisions, many look for alternative forms of entertainment, with casino games remaining among the most popular choices. However, Davy has now informed Calderdale Council that he will not proceed with the purchase. He explained that from the outset he had made it clear that his involvement in both The Shay and sport in Halifax would continue only if his presence and investment were welcomed by the local sporting community and the wider public. In his view, it became evident that a section of local residents and supporters did not share that sentiment.

Unfulfilled vision of a multi-sport community hub

The Giants owner did not hide his disappointment over the collapse of the project. He stressed that his ambition had been to transform The Shay into a modern multi-sport centre serving the entire Calderdale community, rather than only football and rugby supporters.

At the same time, Davy pointed out that his involvement helped deliver a new state-of-the-art playing surface at the stadium. According to local clubs and council representatives, the project may not have been completed without his contribution.

Although the takeover will no longer go ahead, Huddersfield Giants have not ruled out using The Shay in the future. Davy acknowledged that the stadium could still remain a rental option for the club, particularly given its need to generate additional revenue. Other venues in the region are also being considered.

The club’s biggest challenge remains securing a permanent home. The Giants are scheduled to leave the Accu Stadium at the end of the current season, making the search for an alternative venue a key priority. Davy emphasized that discussions with Kirklees Council regarding a long-term solution for the Giants continue to be a priority.

Calderdale Council faces new decisions

Confirmation that the sale process had been halted also came from Reform UK Calderdale. In a social media statement, the group revealed that members of Calderdale Council’s Cabinet had already met to discuss the next steps concerning the future of the stadium.

Ken Davy’s decision brings an end to one of the most significant sports infrastructure projects in Halifax in recent years. At the same time, it leaves open questions regarding the future of The Shay and the direction of its long-term development.
