Nou Mestalla roof to transform Valencia CF’s new stadium

The most important phase of the current works is the installation of the giant roof that will cover all 70,044 seats at Nou Mestalla. Valencia CF describe it as one of the most advanced roofing systems in Spanish football. The structure is based on a radial cable system combined with tension and compression rings.

This type of solution is commonly used in some of the world’s most modern stadiums, reducing the number of internal supports and improving sightlines from the stands. In recent weeks, crews have begun installing special auxiliary scaffolding, stand protection systems and structures known as bird nests — elements mounted around the pillars that are responsible for correctly tensioning the roof-support cables.

Massive roof structure takes shape at Nou Mestalla

According to figures released by the club, the entire roof structure will weigh around 4,800 tonnes. The roof will be supported by 50 steel columns made from S355 structural steel. The first section of the compression ring was installed back in February, while additional segments have been assembled in the following months. So far, construction teams have erected 30 pillars and 21 sections of the compression ring.

A crucial role will also be played by the radial cables connecting the inner tension ring to the external support structure. These cables will ultimately carry the enormous roof above the stadium. The operation is considered one of the most technically demanding stages of the entire project and requires extremely precise coordination.

One of the stadium’s most distinctive features will be the photovoltaic panel system installed around the roof. The project is being delivered by Octopus Energy, while Valencia CF describe the venue as the club’s future green lung. The new infrastructure is expected to significantly reduce energy consumption and improve operational efficiency. Club officials insist that Nou Mestalla is intended to stand out not only from a sporting perspective, but also in environmental terms.

When will Valencia CF move into Nou Mestalla?

The current schedule targets completion of the stadium in summer 2027. Valencia CF hope to begin the following season in the new venue, bringing an end to the club’s long-standing era at the legendary Mestalla.

For the club, the move will represent one of the defining moments of recent decades. Nou Mestalla is expected not only to improve conditions for fans and players, but also to stabilise Valencia’s financial situation through new revenue streams. After years of delays, financial problems and uncertainty, the project is finally beginning to look like a stadium that will genuinely be completed. With the installation of the giant roof now underway, the development is entering its most visually striking stage yet.
