Stadio Artemio Franchi redevelopment reshapes Florence skyline

The new structure is starting to dominate the Campo di Marte district, home of ACF Fiorentina and the historic Stadio Artemio Franchi. The installation of the first massive steel pylon marks the beginning of the most visually striking phase of the redevelopment. Until now, many residents of Florence associated the project mainly with scaffolding, concrete barriers and construction fencing. Now, for the first time, supporters can see the elements that will genuinely shape the future appearance of the stadium.

The new pylons will support the roof above Curva Fiesole, the stadium’s most iconic stand. At the same time, crews continue work on new terrace steps, steel support structures and temporary reinforcements for the main roof beams.

According to city officials and contractors, work remains on schedule despite periods of heavy rain. Florence mayor Sara Funaro stressed that the visible progress on the steel structures is an important signal for both residents and ACF Fiorentina fans, many of whom had feared further delays in recent months.

Fiorentina ready to invest €55 million in stadium redevelopment

A major moment for the entire project came with ACF Fiorentina officially confirming their financial contribution to the redevelopment. The club announced it is prepared to invest €55 million into the second phase of works at Stadio Artemio Franchi. The total cost of this phase is currently estimated at around €110 million.

Club officials insist, however, that the investment depends on several key conditions being met. Among them are full cost control, a clear completion timeline and a long-term agreement guaranteeing the club the right to manage the stadium once redevelopment is complete.

For owner Rocco Commisso, a modern stadium has remained one of the club’s top priorities since taking over ACF Fiorentina. The club has repeatedly argued that upgraded infrastructure is essential to improving both sporting competitiveness and financial stability.

Stadio Artemio Franchi targeted for Euro 2032

Florence hopes to become one of the host cities for UEFA Euro 2032. City officials confirmed that all documents related to financing and stadium redevelopment must be completed by July 31.

Under the current timeline, the first phase of works is expected to finish on February 16, 2027. Testing procedures, technical inspections and final infrastructure works are then scheduled to continue until the end of April 2027. Full completion of the redevelopment is planned for 2029, with ACF Fiorentina expected to move into the fully rebuilt stadium from the 2029/2030 season onward.

Ezio Simonelli, president of Lega Serie A, stated that Florence is currently one of the most advanced stadium projects in Italy. In his view, several other cities preparing for UEFA Euro 2032 are clearly lagging behind.

New Fiorentina stadium expected to boost club revenues

The redevelopment of Stadio Artemio Franchi is considered crucial not only from a sporting perspective, but also commercially. In Italian football, discussions increasingly focus on the growing financial gap between Serie A clubs and the biggest teams from the Premier League or La Liga. The modernised stadium is expected to increase revenue from matchdays, hospitality, VIP boxes and commercial events hosted outside football matches.

Ezio Simonelli also stressed that Italy urgently needs more stadium investments of this scale. According to him, the lack of modern venues remains one of the main reasons Italian football continues to trail Europe’s biggest leagues financially.
