Expansion increases Etihad Stadium capacity

The new name will be used officially for the first time during Pep Guardiola’s final match as manager of Manchester City. The fixture against Aston Villa will also mark the symbolic opening of the expanded section of the stadium.

Construction of the new stand began at the end of 2023 and forms the centrepiece of a major redevelopment of the northern side of the Etihad Stadium. The investment has increased capacity by more than 7,000 seats, pushing the stadium beyond 61,000 spectators.

It is one of the most significant infrastructure projects in Manchester City’s history. The club has not limited itself to expanding seating capacity. The wider project includes the development of a new entertainment and commercial district around the stadium, featuring Medlock Square fan zone, a 401-room hotel, a club museum, retail spaces, offices, restaurants and bars.

The Pep Guardiola Stand becomes a symbol of a new era

Located at the Joe Mercer Way end, the new stand is set to become one of the most recognisable features of the Etihad Campus. Club officials say naming it after Pep Guardiola reflects his impact on the transformation of Manchester City.

A dedicated statue of the manager will also be installed near the stand. The club aims to permanently honour what is widely regarded as the most successful era in its history. Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour has described Guardiola as a symbol of the club’s ambition both on and off the pitch.

Under Guardiola, Manchester City have won 17 major trophies and established dominance in English football. The Spaniard has transformed the team’s playing style and built one of the most recognisable sides in modern football.

Club officials also stress that his influence extends beyond sporting success. Guardiola has played a key role in shaping Manchester City’s organisational culture and the global growth of the club’s brand. Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said the new stand and statue will ensure Guardiola’s legacy remains part of the club’s history, the city of Manchester and English football as a whole.
