Birmingham City’s new stadium to feature increased capacity
The centrepiece of the entire project will be the new The Powerhouse Stadium, set to become the future home of Birmingham City FC. Designed by the renowned Heatherwick Studio, the venue stands out thanks to its futuristic architecture and distinctive towering chimneys, which are expected to become a new symbol of the city.
The new arena will have a capacity of 62,000 spectators, making it one of the largest football stadiums in England. The club emphasises that the design was developed to create a unique atmosphere while preserving the intense matchday environment associated with St Andrew’s. Architects revealed that the stadium was even rotated by 4.5 degrees from the original plans so that the tallest chimney would stand directly alongside the new promenade leading to the venue.
Birmingham City’s stadium atmosphere will remain unique
Designers admitted that the club strongly pushed to maintain an intense matchday atmosphere. One of the most unusual elements of the project will be a specially designed away-fans section. Architects revealed that the club wanted a deliberately less comfortable and more hostile
environment for visiting supporters in order to preserve home advantage.

Inside the stadium, a huge atrium will be built beneath the south stand, which will accommodate 20,000 Birmingham City supporters. This section will also conceal part of the retractable pitch system, set to become one of the most technologically advanced features of the entire project.
The Powerhouse Stadium to offer record-breaking food and beverage facilities
Birmingham City’s new stadium is also expected to become one of the most extensive hospitality venues in England. The project includes as many as 125 food and beverage outlets.
The club revealed that the stadium will be capable of serving up to 266,000 pints of beer during matches. In addition, four huge fan parks with capacity for more than 25,000 people will be built around the stadium. Birmingham City FC wants the venue to function as a full-day entertainment destination rather than simply a football ground operating only a few hours per week.
Sports Quarter Birmingham will transform the eastern part of the city
The Sports Quarter project extends far beyond the stadium itself. Birmingham City aims to create an entirely new district dedicated to sport, culture and entertainment on a 48-acre site purchased from Birmingham City Council. Plans include modern residential areas, restaurants, retail spaces, leisure facilities and year-round event infrastructure.
The club also presented four distinctive zones surrounding the stadium. Blues Square
will serve as the main meeting point for supporters, featuring club stores and restaurants. Market Street
will become a market-inspired retail and food destination. The Terraces
will offer green family and leisure spaces, while The Canal
is intended to create a new waterfront nightlife district with restaurants and cultural events. Birmingham City FC stresses that the stadium should function as an active part of the city even outside matchdays.

Birmingham City stadium construction to begin after council approval
The club plans to formally submit planning documents to Birmingham City Council in March 2027. According to Birmingham City FC representatives, administrative preparations are already underway and the club remains in regular consultation with city authorities.
Infrastructure chief Nick Smith revealed that the site is already being prepared for construction. Groundworks and enabling works are currently taking place to accelerate the future start of building works. Under current plans, the stadium itself could be completed by 2030. However, the club notes that the project depends on many factors, including weather conditions, material availability and contractor capacity. Birmingham City wants to shorten administrative procedures as much as possible so that construction can begin immediately once approval is granted.
New railway station to serve Birmingham City stadium
One of the key parts of the project will be a major overhaul of transport infrastructure around the stadium. Birmingham City FC considers the current Adderley Park Station insufficient and unsafe during major events. As a result, the club plans to build a completely new railway station directly integrated with the Sports Quarter. The new facility will accommodate 12-car trains and allow more than 60,000 supporters to move efficiently after matches.
Special interchange hubs for buses and cars will also be created, linked to the planned Curzon Street HS2 station. In addition, the development is expected to benefit from a new tram line financed as part of the £2.4 billion West Midlands transport development programme.

The club also announced plans for a dedicated Blues Way
promenade inspired by London’s Wembley Way. The new route will guide thousands of supporters directly to the stadium and is expected to become one of the most recognisable areas of the new complex.
Birmingham City hopes to transform all of Bordesley Green
Club officials and local politicians stress that the Sports Quarter will play a key role in the regeneration of Bordesley Green. The project is expected to attract tourists, investors and event organisers from around the world.
Birmingham City’s new stadium is intended to symbolise a modern city and act as a catalyst for the wider development of the entire region. The club believes the investment could become one of the most important urban projects in modern Birmingham’s history. For Birmingham City supporters, meanwhile, the project represents the beginning of a completely new era — with a new stadium, modern infrastructure and the ambition to create one of Europe’s most impressive football venues.
