Vitality Stadium has officially received approval for a major expansion. Green light for increasing the capacity of Vitality Stadium
Councillors from Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council have unanimously approved plans to expand the Vitality Stadium, with the redevelopment set to increase capacity to more than 20,000 seats. The project involves a major reconstruction of the stadium. The most significant changes will affect the South Stand, which is set to be completely demolished and rebuilt from scratch.
The North and East Stands will also be expanded, while the stadium corners will be filled in. As a result, capacity will increase by more than 9,000 seats. The redevelopment also includes new hospitality areas, upgraded media facilities, food and beverage outlets and a modern fan zone.
Officials at AFC Bournemouth insist the expansion is essential if the club wants to remain competitive at the highest level. Chief business officer Jim Frevola told councillors that surviving in the Premier League long term with a stadium capacity of only 11,000 would be almost impossible.

Expansion prepares Vitality Stadium for european football
An additional factor accelerating the investment is Bournemouth’s historic qualification for European competition. The club’s best-ever Premier League finish has given the stadium project even greater strategic importance.
Bournemouth ended the season in sixth place, the highest league finish in the club’s history. As a result, The Cherries
will compete in Europe for the first time, requiring upgrades to the stadium’s infrastructure to meet new organisational and commercial demands. According to club officials, a larger stadium is expected not only to increase revenue but also to strengthen Bournemouth’s international profile.
Vitality Stadium redevelopment to begin before the 2026/27 season
Construction is expected to begin during the off-season ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. The works will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to club operations and matchdays.
The project also includes new entrances, turnstiles, fencing and improved facilities for media and television broadcasting. The club has additionally promised upgrades to the surrounding infrastructure and the creation of new fan spaces around the stadium.

Bournemouth residents raise concerns over stadium expansion
Although the plans were approved unanimously, some local residents expressed concerns about the impact of the redevelopment on the surrounding area. The most common issues raised involved parking, traffic congestion and increased supporter movement on matchdays.
Some residents also pointed out that parts of the expanded stands will be located closer to nearby homes than before, potentially affecting the quality of life around the stadium. Councillors stressed, however, that the club had consulted with the local community and incorporated some of the feedback into the final plans.
BCP Council maintains that the project will benefit the wider city. Council leader Millie Earl said the investment would create new jobs, boost tourism and improve Bournemouth’s visibility both nationally and internationally. City officials also announced plans to modernise infrastructure around the stadium, including bus stops, pedestrian crossings, public spaces and signage.
