Three options for the club’s future
One of the options still on the table is the expansion of the current La Rosaleda. The main advantage of this solution lies in the venue’s deep-rooted presence in the identity of Málaga’s residents, as well as its central location within the city. The modernization plan builds on the concept previously developed as part of the 2030 World Cup bid and includes a significant upgrade of the infrastructure. However, experts point to major challenges, such as the need to redesign the surrounding road network and spatial constraints caused by the proximity of the Guadalmedina river.
At this stage, the strongest candidate appears to be the construction of a completely new stadium near the expanding university campus. This area stands out for its excellent transport connections, including metro, buses and a well-developed road network. Another advantage is the advanced level of urban planning and the availability of a sufficiently large plot, capable of accommodating a UEFA-compliant stadium. Even so, the project would need to address constraints related to aviation regulations, hydrology and road infrastructure.
The third option under consideration is the San Cayetano site, already included in the city’s urban development plan. This area offers extensive land availability and room for future expansion. The terrain conditions are favorable, and the relatively low level of urbanization makes it easier to develop a large-scale project. On the other hand, the investment would require significant spending on transport infrastructure and the preparation of full urban planning documentation.
Two proposals were ruled out in the first phase: Lagar de Oliveros and Manzana Verde. In the case of Lagar de Oliveros, the main issues were spatial limitations, difficult topography and insufficient urban planning preparation. Manzana Verde, meanwhile, was excluded primarily due to its residential character. Plans for more than 900 housing units, including a large share of social housing, would require a complete change in land use and a major reorganization of existing urban plans.

Multi-criteria analysis to decide the path forward
The next step will be a detailed multi-criteria analysis comparing the three remaining locations from technical, economic and social perspectives. This process will lead to a recommendation on the optimal site for the future La Rosaleda stadium.
The final report is expected by May 15 and will also include a detailed timeline for the project. However, it is important to note that the document will not be binding, and the final decision will rest with public authorities, who may commission additional studies before making a definitive call.
