Scotland: Will Aberdeen FC get a new stadium? Residents support the project The future of Pittodrie Stadium is hanging in the balance. Aberdeen FC is pushing forward with plans for a seaside move, and growing public support could decide the fate of one of Scotland’s oldest stadiums.

The club has been planning for years to leave the historic Pittodrie Stadium, its home since 1903. The new venue is proposed for a coastal site, as part of a broader regeneration of the city’s seafront leisure areas. The concept centres on a multi-purpose community stadium, designed not only for football but also for wider public use. Aberdeen FC would act as the main tenant, hosting around 25 home matches per season.

The key sticking point remains the financing model. The club favours a structure in which Aberdeen City Council takes out a loan to fund construction, to be repaid over time through rent paid by the club. Private investment is also expected to play a role, helping to reduce the burden on public finances. Even so, some local politicians oppose the use of taxpayer money for the project.

Public support in Aberdeen for a coastal stadium

A recent large-scale public survey has added a new dimension to the debate. More than 60% of residents support building the stadium alongside a wider leisure complex near the beach.

Notably, 66% of respondents are in favour of Aberdeen City Council using public funds to support the project. Even higher levels of support were recorded for potential backing from the Scottish Government and central authorities in London.

Cost of the Aberdeen stadium and its impact on the local economy

The estimated cost of the stadium and leisure complex stands at around £80 million. The project forms part of a wider redevelopment strategy for the city’s seafront. Experts suggest that keeping Aberdeen FC in a central location could generate up to £1.6 billion for the local economy over a 50-year period. The new stadium is seen as a potential driver for tourism, services and the broader leisure sector.

The plans go beyond football. The project includes a wider recreational complex, with strong interest in a modern water park or leisure pool. Other proposals include an ice rink suitable for professional use, as well as community and leisure spaces.

Despite growing public backing, the city council remains divided over how to fund the project. The ruling coalition has signalled willingness to work with the club, while stressing the limits of public spending.

Ongoing negotiations are therefore crucial—not only for the stadium itself, but for the future development of the entire seafront area.

Future of Aberdeen FC’s stadium and possible scenarios

Talks between the parties are ongoing, aimed at finding a workable delivery model. If a compromise is reached, the project could become one of the most significant infrastructure investments in the region.

Failure to agree, however, could mean further delays or a shift towards alternative solutions. In the background, strong public support remains a key factor that could influence the final decision on Aberdeen FC’s new stadium.
