Demand to cancel the San Siro sale and resignation of the mayor of Milan

Fratelli d’Italia, an opposition party in the Milan city council, has submitted a formal motion to cancel the decision regarding the sale of San Siro. The request is primarily justified by an ongoing prosecution investigation examining the legality and correctness of administrative procedures related to the transfer of the stadium to the football clubs.

According to party representatives, there is a real risk that further implementation of the resolution could expose the city to serious financial and legal consequences, especially if the investigation confirms irregularities in the decision-making process. The motion is expected to be debated in the city council, and its authors hope for support from part of the governing majority, although no broad political agreement has been reached so far.

During one of the city council sessions, the political conflict over the San Siro stadium escalated significantly. Fratelli d’Italia councillors left the chamber while displaying banners calling for the resignation of mayor Giuseppe Sala. This gesture was interpreted as a demonstration of opposition to the entire decision-making process and led to a temporary suspension of the session. The atmosphere in the council became highly tense, and the protest was used by the opposition as a symbol of a broader crisis of trust in the management of key infrastructure projects in Milan, particularly the future of the San Siro stadium.

San Siro sale and legal and financial controversies

The decision to sell the San Siro stadium, taken in September 2025, included not only the transfer of the stadium itself but also the surrounding land. The investment plan involves building a new stadium to replace the current one, followed by a possible demolition of the existing structure. However, the entire process raises numerous legal and financial concerns, particularly regarding a possible undervaluation of the property and the risk of the public sector losing control over a strategic urban area. Questions are also being raised about existing contracts and potential penalty clauses that could significantly limit the city’s ability to withdraw from the transaction without incurring costs.

San Siro modernization instead of building a new stadium in Milan

In public debate, an alternative to demolishing San Siro and building a new stadium is increasingly being discussed. Supporters of modernization argue that the existing structure, despite its age, still has significant adaptation potential and could be upgraded to meet modern UEFA standards and commercial requirements of the clubs.

It is emphasized that renovation could reduce environmental costs associated with demolition and lower the risk of delays caused by administrative and legal procedures. At the same time, modernization would preserve the historical identity of the stadium, which for decades has been one of the symbols of European football and Milan’s urban culture.

One of the key points of dispute regarding the future of San Siro is its capacity and adaptation to new football business models. The current stadium can hold around 75,000 spectators, making it one of the largest in Europe, but according to Inter and Milan, it no longer fully meets modern requirements regarding comfort, VIP areas and commercial spaces. Plans for a new stadium include not only maintaining high seating capacity but also significantly expanding areas for non-sporting activities, including restaurants, shops and entertainment zones designed to generate additional revenue regardless of sporting events.
