Cagliari Calcio stadium project enters decisive phase – tender possible in 2026
The project to build a new stadium for Cagliari Calcio has moved into a decisive phase following a key meeting between representatives of the city, the club and UEFA. The talks, held at Cagliari’s city hall, lasted just over an hour, but all parties described the outcome as clearly positive. According to those involved, the main formal and organisational hurdles that had been holding up the investment have now been resolved. This opens the door to launching the tender procedure, one of the crucial steps before construction can begin.
One of the main takeaways from the meeting is that the tender for the project could be announced in the coming months. Project representatives stress that all critical issues have now been clarified, significantly accelerating the timeline. City officials indicate that the procedure could begin as early as July, with documentation already aligned with the organisational requirements of UEFA Euro 2032. This is a key factor, as the new stadium is expected to form part of the tournament infrastructure.

Cost of the Cagliari stadium and financing model
The estimated cost of the new venue stands at around €220 million. Importantly, the project will be delivered through a mixed financing model—approximately €60 million will come from public funds, with the remainder covered by private investment.
The city has also set the annual rent for use of the stadium at between €150,000 and €180,000. Notably, this figure is based on regulatory frameworks rather than standard market negotiations. In addition, the club will face separate matchday operating costs, which could exceed €2 million per year.
Sports infrastructure upgrade in Cagliari and Euro 2032 plans
The new stadium will be built on the site of the former Stadio Sant'Elia, which served as the club’s home for years. The project includes a modern venue with a capacity of around 30,000 seats, in line with mid-sized European stadium standards. Notably, the structure will be shifted by around 55 metres from its previous location, reflecting the need to adapt the design to modern urban and infrastructure requirements.
One of the main goals of the investment is to prepare the city to co-host UEFA Euro 2032. The new stadium is expected to meet all UEFA requirements in terms of safety, infrastructure and media facilities. For the city, this represents not only sporting development but also an opportunity to attract tourists and investors. Local authorities stress that the project goes far beyond football—it forms part of a broader regional development strategy.

Cagliari stadium timeline – construction set to start in 2027
According to current plans, construction is scheduled to begin in 2027. This is a key deadline in the context of UEFA Euro 2032 preparations, allowing sufficient time to complete the project and test the venue ahead of the tournament. Club representatives and investors emphasise that the next crucial step will be the efficient handling of administrative procedures and the tender process. The private sector is set to play a major role, taking on a significant share of the financial risk.
