England: Thousand-year future at The Den. Unprecedented Millwall FC deal London club Millwall FC has finalised a historic lease agreement for The Den stadium for the next 999 years. This is an unprecedented event in English football, which coincides with the Lions' fight for a highly desired promotion to the Premier League.

Unprecedented contract in England

Founded in 1885, the team does not have many spectacular sporting successes to its name, and gained international notoriety mainly through films such as The Football Factory and Green Street Hooligans. These productions portrayed local supporters as one of the most fanatical fan groups in the British Isles.

However, emotions in the British Isles are not just about fanatical cheering in football stands. Millwall could certainly explore the adoption of a new stadium sponsor, such as a bingo UK sponsor, to bring more revenue to the club and the stadium.

Since 1993, the players' home has been the new The Den venue, which replaced the old stadium of the same name that served the team from 1910 to 1993. Now, under an official agreement with the London Borough of Lewisham council, the club has secured the rights to the arena and adjacent lands for almost a whole millennium, for 999 years.

The club's hierarchy emphasises that such a long-term commitment will allow the realisation of ambitious plans. These include, above all, improving the fan experience on matchdays and significantly increasing the year-round utility of the stadium's infrastructure.

The changes will also bring tangible benefits to the local community. The club's foundation, the Millwall Community Trust, will gain access to a protected space, which will significantly help in expanding its current reach and allow it to play an even more important role in the region.

The chairman's statement and thanks

The club's authorities do not hide their joy at the successful conclusion of months of negotiations. This is a defining moment for Millwall Football Club and Millwall Community Trust, emphasised chairman James Berylson. The London club's boss highlighted the immense significance of this event for the team's future: Securing a 999-year lease at The Den gives us the stability and certainty every club needs to build for the long term.

also remembered the people involved in this process: So much hard work, time and dedication has gone into reaching this moment, I would like to thank Mayor Brenda Dacres OBE, and all at Lewisham Council for their positive and collaborative approach. He concluded his statement with the words: Together we have secured an outcome that safeguards our home while supporting the wider interests of the borough.

Chance for historic sporting success

Securing the club's infrastructural future perfectly coincides with the team's excellent form on the pitch. Millwall has never played in the revamped Premier League in its history, and spent only two seasons in the English top flight (then the First Division) between 1988 and 1990. Currently, however, the team is doing exceptionally well in the second tier.

The team from The Den occupies a high, third place in the Championship table, trailing the second spot, which guarantees direct promotion, by just two points. Crowning this campaign with promotion to the dream league would be the perfect complement to signing the thousand-year agreement.
