Origin of the investment and regional importance
Hoima City Stadium is equipped with an athletics track and covered stands capable of accommodating 20,000 spectators. The arena is among the largest and most modern stadiums in the country. A sports complex was built in the immediate surroundings of the stadium, including a multipurpose hall, a swimming pool, and a training stadium. The complex is located about 5 km east of Hoima city centre, along the main road leading eastward.
If you appreciate the development of African stadiums and want to support this project, vote for the stadium in the Stadium of the Year 2025 poll and help highlight one of the most modern arenas in East Africa.
The idea of building the stadium appeared as early as 2019, when the Rujumba family donated 10 acres of land to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) for the construction of a sports arena. The agreement was signed on 27 October 2020. After Uganda was selected as a co-host of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, the national authorities decided to implement the project. In November 2023, the government purchased additional land, increasing the investment area to nearly 35 acres. The project was officially announced by the country’s president in a televised address.
Construction and inauguration of Hoima City Stadium
The contract for the project was signed on 7 June 2024 with the company Summa, and construction work began on 1 July 2024 under a design-and-build model. The cost of the project was about 129 million USD and was fully covered by the state budget.
Construction progressed very efficiently. In March 2025, the construction site was visited by the President of Uganda, the First Lady, the Prime Minister, and other officials, during which a commemorative cornerstone was unveiled. The stadium was officially opened on 24 December 2025. During the ceremony, the President delivered a speech, and the event was attended by government representatives and diplomats. On the day of the inauguration, the stadium hosted a friendly match between Kitara FC and KCCA FC (1–0), as well as a rugby match and several accompanying events.
Significance of Hoima City Stadium
Hoima City Stadium is the first sports infrastructure project of such scale in the city and one of the largest stadiums in Uganda. The investment is an important element of preparations for international sporting events and a symbol of the development of the Hoima region in the coming years.
