Spain: Front-row Camp Nou photos are going viral. Fans are complaining about poor visibility

Photos from Camp Nou are sparking debate, drawing attention not to the stands themselves, but to what fans cannot see from them. Visibility issues are resurfacing despite the stadium’s redevelopment. Is this a design flaw or the result of compromises?

Visibility problems in the front rows at Camp Nou
Fans seated in the lower tiers of Camp Nou report that they struggle to see the goal line – and in some cases even parts of the posts. In practice, this means that during key moments such as shots or penalties, sections of the crowd are unable to fully follow the action.
Several factors combine to limit visibility: insufficient stand steepness, flawed geometry in the front rows and the presence of pitchside advertising. As a result, the issue affects up to a dozen rows closest to the field – a situation that is difficult to justify in a modern stadium of this scale.
Another factor reducing viewing comfort is the so-called TV U
advertising positioned behind the goals. While important from a commercial standpoint, it obstructs the lower parts of the pitch and the goal line. In the past, the problem was partially addressed by moving advertising boards further away from the end line. Previous examples suggest that even minor adjustments can noticeably improve sightlines.

Design choices and unresolved sightline issues
One of the key principles in stadium design is sightline geometry – ensuring every spectator has an unobstructed view of the field. In the case of Camp Nou, this issue has not been fully resolved.
The original concept by Nikken Sekkei included increasing the slope of the lower tiers, which would have improved visibility at the cost of some seating capacity in the upper rows of those sections. However, after revisions introduced by FC Barcelona, the decision was made to retain the existing geometry – effectively preserving the current shortcomings.

Possible solutions at Camp Nou
Visibility issues are not new at the stadium. Even in its original 1957 configuration, the lower tiers offered weaker sightlines compared to higher levels. Some improvement came with the 1994 renovation, when the pitch was lowered by around 2.5 meters, improving viewing angles without fully resolving the issue. The current redevelopment was therefore seen as an opportunity to address it once and for all – an opportunity that, according to many observers, has not been fully taken.
One of the simplest solutions would be to remove advertising boards behind the goals entirely, though this would come at a financial cost. A more realistic option could be to move them closer to the stands to widen the field of view. Another approach would involve limiting ticket sales in the lowest rows or repurposing those seats – something already partially implemented in selected sections. However, such measures do not solve the problem at its core; they merely reduce its impact.
