Spain: FC Barcelona will be forced to leave Camp Nou. Johan Cruyff Stadium under consideration The next phase of the Spotify Camp Nou project could force FC Barcelona into another temporary move, with the club already exploring alternative options. Estadi Johan Cruyff is emerging as the leading candidate, but it would require significant changes. Is this where Barça will relocate?

Roof construction at Spotify Camp Nou key to timeline

The planned installation of the roof is one of the most technologically advanced elements of the entire project. The new structure is expected not only to improve fan comfort but also to boost the stadium’s commercial potential by enabling year-round events, regardless of weather conditions.

However, this phase requires the pitch to be completely taken out of use, meaning matches will have to be relocated. Club officials stress that although the installation period is relatively short, its impact on season logistics could be significant — especially if it coincides with the start of the 2027/28 league season.

Expansion of Estadi Johan Cruyff as an alternative

The most realistic scenario is a temporary move to the Estadi Johan Cruyff, located in Sant Joan Despí. However, the stadium currently does not meet LaLiga requirements, which set a minimum capacity of 8,000 seats.

To address this, plans include a significant expansion, adding around 10,000 seats. After completion, the venue could host approximately 15,000–16,000 spectators, similar to the former Mini Estadi, and sufficient for first-team matches.

Importantly, the expansion would not be temporary. FC Barcelona aims to create permanent infrastructure that will later serve the women’s team and reserve sides, enhancing the overall functionality of the training complex.

Transport and infrastructure challenges

One of the main challenges linked to using the Estadi Johan Cruyff is transport infrastructure. The surrounding area is not currently equipped to handle large-scale events, and access roads often become congested.

The club is in talks with local authorities, who do not oppose the project, but improvements to transport accessibility will be necessary. Without them, increasing the stadium’s capacity could lead to serious logistical issues on matchdays.

No return to Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys

An alternative option would be a return to the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, but the club has firmly ruled out this scenario. The main reasons are high operational costs and limited economic viability for hosting only a small number of matches.

Additionally, returning to Montjuïc would require reconfiguring infrastructure and logistics once again, which makes little sense for such a short-term solution. As a result, the club’s strategy is focused on developing its own facilities rather than relying on external venues.
