Administrative procedures before construction of the stadium in rome
The authorities of Rome have officially approved the development of a new stadium for AS Roma in the Pietralata district. The decision taken by the city’s executive body marks a decisive step toward launching the €1.5 billion investment. For months, the project has stirred debate among supporters and residents alike, and the approval now clears the way for the final administrative stages before construction can begin.
The next steps include votes in the relevant city commissions and final approval by the Capitoline Assembly. Once the project is formally recognised as being in the public interest, a Conference of Services will be convened with the participation of all involved institutions, including the Lazio Region. This procedure may take up to 120 days. It will be followed by the signing of the urban planning agreement, the launch of international tenders and, ultimately, the laying of the foundation stone.
Rome’s mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, stressed that the new stadium is intended to be more than a sporting venue. According to the city, it forms part of a broader strategy to regenerate the entire Pietralata area and to strengthen Rome’s credibility in delivering major infrastructure projects.

The new as roma stadium in pietralata as a catalyst for urban renewal
The stadium project fits into a wider plan to reshape the north-eastern quadrant of the capital. The venue is designed as a modern, multifunctional urban hub, open and active throughout the year rather than limited to matchdays.
The investment is being led by club owner Dan Friedkin, who submitted the Technical and Economic Feasibility Project (PFTE) in December. The documentation covers a 27-hectare site, a significant portion of which is earmarked for public use. The complex will include 11.6 hectares of green areas and 3.5 hectares of squares and pedestrian routes. In total, around 15 hectares will consist of open, publicly accessible space.
The new AS Roma stadium will have a capacity of 60,605 spectators. Particular attention has been drawn to the end stand behind one of the goals, designed to hold 23,000 fans — potentially making it one of the largest curva
sections in Europe. Architecturally, the project references the legacy of ancient Rome. The façades are set to feature clear club symbols, including the Roma 1927
inscription on the southern side and the AS Roma crest on the northern elevation. The design aims to balance contemporary solutions with the city’s historical heritage, underlining the club’s identity and its roots in the local culture.

The venue is also planned as a business and entertainment hub. The project foresees a 1,600 m² club museum, a 1,800 m² fan store and around 30 retail units. In addition, 245 m² have been allocated for a park bar and as much as 21,000 m² for hospitality and conference facilities in the MICE format. Such a broad commercial offering is intended to secure stable, year-round revenues and reduce dependence on sporting results alone.
Construction timeline of the as roma stadium
The investors aim to begin construction works by March 2027. Completion is targeted for 2030, which would allow the stadium to be used during UEFA Euro 2032.
If the schedule is maintained, the new venue could become one of Italy’s key football facilities and mark the beginning of a new chapter for AS Roma and the city of Rome.
