Planned infrastructure changes at St James’ Park
The leadership of Newcastle United F.C. has received approval to carry out significant changes at St James' Park. The decision was made by the club’s ownership fund, Public Investment Fund, which approved the stadium modernization plans scheduled to take place in the summer following the end of the 2025/2026 season. According to the club’s chief executive David Hopkinson, the upgrades will primarily focus on elements that affect the comfort of fans during matches.
One of the most significant planned changes will be the installation of additional television screens in the stadium’s circulation areas, known as concourses. Currently, supporters standing near bars or food outlets often have limited opportunities to follow the action on the pitch because only a small number of screens are available. The new screens are expected to allow fans to watch the live match broadcast from various parts of the stadium. This solution is already a standard feature in many modern sports venues in North America, where Hopkinson previously worked.

Another planned improvement involves increasing the number of stadium clocks displaying the match time. Until now, fans seated in certain sections have sometimes had difficulty seeing them, which made it harder to follow the flow of the game. The modernization is therefore primarily intended to improve the overall matchday experience and increase the stadium’s functionality during sporting events.
Could the modernization of St James’ Park precede a larger expansion?
Since the takeover of the club by Public Investment Fund, speculation has frequently emerged about a much larger redevelopment of the stadium or even the construction of a completely new venue. Among the scenarios being considered are both the expansion of St James' Park and the relocation of the club to a new stadium at a different site. One of the ideas that has been discussed involves building a new stadium near Leazes Park.
For now, however, these larger projects have been pushed to the background. The club’s leadership is currently focusing on other infrastructure investments, such as the development of the training centre and the reorganisation of the club’s management structures.
