Cagliari’s UEFA EURO 2032 bid depends on stadium construction

A key deadline in the project timeline is June, by which the city intends to announce an international public tender for the construction of the new stadium. This step is essential for UEFA to officially include Cagliari among the candidate host cities for UEFA EURO 2032 in July 2026.

Municipal authorities emphasize that the project is already at an advanced technical, administrative, and economic-financial stage. However, before the final approval of the economic and financial plan (PEF), several issues must still be clarified — including the land surface rights (diritto di superficie) and the level of the concession fee. These elements could significantly affect the project’s long-term profitability.

Meeting at FIGC confirms progress on Cagliari stadium

Talks held at the headquarters of the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio in Rome brought together key stakeholders. Participants included Martin Kallen, CEO of UEFA Events SA, Michele Uva, UEFA executive director and delegate for EURO 2032, as well as representatives of the federation, city authorities, and industrial partner COSTIM RE. The architectural concept of the new stadium in Cagliari was presented by Giovanni Giacobone from Sportium, the studio responsible for the design.

The documentation demonstrated full compliance with UEFA guidelines regarding infrastructure, safety, media facilities, and hospitality standards. The stadium is designed to host international matches while meeting the highest federation requirements. The meeting concluded with a declaration of full institutional cooperation between the club, the city, and the federation to meet UEFA’s deadlines.

Surface rights and concession fees still to be defined

Although the project has received a positive assessment, several sensitive legal and financial aspects must still be finalized before full approval. Chief among them are the terms governing the transfer of land usage rights and the concession payments the club will owe to the city.

These factors are crucial for the adoption of the final economic and financial plan and, subsequently, for launching the public tender process. City officials, however, have expressed determination to complete the procedure within the established timeframe.

A new stadium as a catalyst for Cagliari and Sardinia

The investment carries not only sporting significance but also major urban and economic implications. The new venue will replace the demolished Stadio Sant'Elia and is set to become one of the most important infrastructure assets on Sardinia.

It is expected to function as a multifunctional hub for sporting and cultural events, attracting tourists and investors alike. Inclusion of Cagliari among the hosts of UEFA EURO 2032 would bring substantial funding for supporting infrastructure, transport modernization, and international promotion of the region.
