The National Capital Planning Commission has suggested a classical direction for the new Washington Commanders stadium, which could influence its final appearance. Commission chair Will Scharf emphasized the need to reference Washington’s traditional architecture.

Classical architecture for the new Washington Commanders stadium
In remarks quoted by the Washington Business Journal, Scharf stated that the stadium should incorporate architectural elements aligned with the capital’s identity, such as classical proportions, monumentality, and details inspired by ancient architecture. In his view, this approach would allow the new venue to integrate more effectively into the cityscape over which the stadium is expected to have a strong visual presence.
Scharf assumed the role of chair of the National Capital Planning Commission in July 2025 following his appointment by President Donald Trump. The NCPC oversees urban development across the National Capital Region, although in this specific project its role is strictly advisory.
The role of stadiums in urban planning according to the National Capital Planning Commission
The NCPC chair referred to the historical role of stadiums and arenas in urban structures, noting their importance as early as ancient times. He argued that for many decades the United States moved away from this tradition, which, in his opinion, negatively affected both the fan experience and the quality of public spaces surrounding sports venues. In this context, the new Washington Commanders stadium is envisioned not only as a modern sports facility, but also as an element that organizes and enhances the capital’s public realm.
The planned stadium is set to be built on the site currently occupied by the aging RFK Stadium, which opened 64 years ago and was designed by George Leighton Dahl. Although the land remains federally owned, its administration has been transferred to the government of the District of Columbia, enabling the revitalization process to begin. The project will not be funded with federal money. Instead, the city will lease the site to the club, which will be responsible for delivering the investment. Because the location lies outside Washington’s core monumental area, the NCPC is not required to formally approve the project and will only issue advisory opinions.

Washington Commanders stadium project designed by HKS
In November, the Washington Commanders selected the architecture firm HKS as the lead designer of the new, roofed 65,000-seat stadium. The venue is intended to replace the outdated RFK Stadium and serve as the centerpiece of a new sports and entertainment district.
According to HKS, the stadium is envisioned as a new city landmark, combining monumental architecture with open public spaces designed to function beyond matchdays. The project also aims to reconnect the eastern part of the city with the Anacostia River and stimulate investment in this part of Washington.
Classical architectural style and the politics of the Trump administration
The recommendations favoring a classical aesthetic align with the broader political direction of the Donald Trump administration. In August 2025, the president signed an executive order titled Making Federal Architecture Beautiful Again,
promoting classical and traditional architecture as the preferred style for federal buildings. Trump has also reportedly taken a personal interest in the stadium project and publicly suggested naming it after himself, although final naming rights remain under the club’s control.
