Atlético Madrid is planning the next step in the evolution of its stadium. The Metropolitano is set to receive a new façade designed to conceal the raw concrete and give the venue a more refined, prestigious appearance.

A new façade for the Metropolitano instead of exposed concrete
Information about the plans was confirmed by Antonio Ortiz, architect and co-founder of Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos, the studio responsible for the design of Metropolitano. As he admitted, the club is not satisfied with the dominance of exposed concrete on the exterior of the venue and expects the stadium to be given a more noble
and refined character. The new concept is intended to focus on transforming the stadium’s outer envelope so that the concrete structure is visually concealed.
One of the main assumptions of the planned modernization is the complete enclosure of the stadium’s corners, which currently remain partially open. The new skin
of the building would give the stadium a coherent and unified form, strengthening the monumental character of its architecture. Importantly, the project concerns only the external layer of the stadium – no works inside the venue are currently planned.
The planned refurbishment will not affect the stadium’s capacity, which currently stands at 70,460 seats. The Metropolitano will therefore remain one of the largest football venues in Spain, with the changes being purely aesthetic and image-oriented in nature.
AI-generated visualizations of the new Metropolitano façade
The first unofficial visualizations of the new façade have already appeared online. One of them was created by a user known as Yugo Slavia
using artificial intelligence tools. According to this concept, the distinctive white mesh known from the Metropolitano roof would be extended all the way down to ground level. Such a solution would make the concrete structure almost invisible, give the stadium a more closed
appearance, and create a striking illuminated effect on the façade at night.
Although these visualizations are purely fan-made concepts and do not represent an official architectural proposal, one thing is certain: Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos is indeed working on a new façade design for the stadium. The goal is to give the Metropolitano a more prestigious appearance and align it with the expectations of the club and its international brand. If the project is implemented, the Metropolitano could become not only a modern football arena, but also one of the most recognizable stadiums in Europe in terms of architecture.
