Peaceful shareholders' meeting and clear figures
During the ordinary and extraordinary general meeting of Betis shareholders, held at the Barceló Renacimiento hotel in Seville, president Ángel Haro detailed the current status of Benito Villamarín Stadium renovation. The event proceeded in a calm atmosphere and concluded with all agenda items approved by over 70% of votes.
The president began by reviewing the club's financial condition. Betis is a more stable club than a few years ago, but we are still in the building phase. It was a record year in ordinary revenues, allowing us to stabilize among clubs competing for Europe. However, our operating results, known as EBITDA, remain negative, confirming that ordinary revenues are not sufficient,
Haro explained.
Benito Villamarín as a strategic pillar
The new stadium topic drew the most attention. According to Betis president, modernizing Benito Villamarín is key to the club's future. Moving to Cartuja is an essential condition for carrying out the greatest project in the latest history of Betis club. It is the most important pillar of the medium- and long-term strategy. It is not just an urban or architectural action, but structural for the club's model,
Haro emphasized.
The president added that the new stadium in central Seville will allow Real Betis to increase assets and revenues, while significantly improving the fan experience. Betis fans will experience something unique: vertical stands, new roof, state-of-the-art technology, gastronomic areas. Days will be longer and more intense, and revenues will approach the desired 200 million, which will allow improving the current squad,
he announced.
Delays in the project—related to the demolition of the Preferencia stand and lack of signed contracts with contractors—raised questions from shareholders. Haro admitted the process is not easy, but dividing the construction into stages and partnering with construction firms will bring greater efficiency. The easiest would have been to close everything earlier, but we decided to get involved, divide the project into stages and increase efficiency in terms of costs and financing,
he explained.
The club is currently working with three firms: Sacyr, Fomento y Sando, and Acciona. Offers are to be accepted by January 30, 2026, with the contract for earthworks and foundations signed on February 27. The next phase, covering the main construction, starts in July 2026. Works completion is scheduled for May 2, 2028.
Costs and financing of Heliópolis stadium?
The total investment cost is set at 262 million €. Of this, 15 million comes from CVC funds, and the remaining 247 million from debt financing. Betis forecasts the new stadium will generate cash surpluses: 7.8 million € in the first year of operation, 13 million after a decade, and 20 million annually after 20 years.
Main expenses include 202 million € for construction itself, 20 million for unforeseen costs, 9.8 million for fees and advisory, 19 million for indirect costs, and 10 million for debt service reserve fund. Additionally, Betis plans investment in an adjacent building managed by Betis Real Estate, to include a hotel and clinic.
Stadium financing is very advanced today thanks to revenues generated by the new stadium, allowing debt repayment with a surplus. It would have been easier to give up all this earlier, but we divided the whole process into stages. It will be a more efficient solution in terms of construction costs and financing,
Haro noted.
Betis stays in Heliópolis
There are many examples of clubs that took this step. All European clubs are doing it. Not all could do it in their headquarters, some had to change location. In our case, it will be Heliópolis,
he said, confirming no plans to relocate elsewhere.
The meeting ended in a positive atmosphere, with Haro thanking fans and shareholders for support. We count on huge support, which motivates us to make Betis bigger and bigger. Ten years have passed since the September 23, 2015 meeting. Looking back, we can say the dream came true: six European qualifications, training center, Copa del Rey title, new stadium... We will continue working relentlessly, always putting Betis interests first,
the club president concluded.
