Delays in preparations for AS Roma’s Pietralata stadium
Preparatory works in Pietralata have been postponed multiple times. During the first attempt to begin archaeological excavations, clashes broke out between police and protesters opposing the project. The demonstrations focused on tree removal, the management of green areas, and concerns over preserving the district’s historical elements. As tensions escalated, the club and City Hall decided to suspend the start of works.

Archaeological challenges at AS Roma’s Pietralata stadium site
In response to the delays, the Italian government appointed a special commissioner for stadium projects, Massimo Sessa. His role is to accelerate the construction process and help overcome certain administrative barriers. These powers are particularly significant in the context of preparations for UEFA Euro 2032, which Italy will co-host with Turkey.
The main challenges remain archaeological research and environmental management. Within the future stadium area, an ancient Roman cistern has been discovered. Authorities are considering integrating it into the project as a museum space accessible to fans.

New construction timeline ahead of Euro 2032
Additionally, the site includes a wooded area, and tree removal requires approval from regional authorities. So far, full documentation and compensation plans for the trees have not been submitted. According to Resolution No. 73 of 2023, the final project can only be presented once all 24 requirements set by the Preliminary Services Conference have been met.
While the first match at the new stadium was previously projected for 2028, current delays have pushed the timeline toward UEFA Euro 2032. The club and city authorities are attempting to resolve the situation without extensive use of the commissioner’s powers, aiming to avoid political controversy ahead of the 2027 local elections.
The presentation of the updated stadium project in Pietralata is expected to take place on December 22 or 23, most likely without a ceremonial event. Instead, a joint statement from the club and City Hall is planned. Observers note that Rome’s residents prefer concrete actions over grand announcements, and the club remains under pressure to deliver tangible solutions before construction begins.
