Bogotá is on the brink of one of the largest sports and urban transformations in its history. The legendary Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín is set to make way for a state-of-the-art, world-class arena. The development is expected not only to redefine the stadium itself, but also to reshape the role of sport and entertainment in the Colombian capital.

No break in matches or concerts – El Campín to remain operational
Daniel García, Director of the District Institute of Recreation and Sport (IDRD), has officially confirmed that construction is scheduled to begin in March 2026. According to the current timeline, works will continue through the end of 2027, with the full opening of the new stadium planned for 2028. City authorities emphasize that the project is progressing as planned and that cooperation within the public-private partnership with the Sencia consortium remains smooth and uninterrupted.
One of the key assumptions of the project is that there will be no interruption to the stadium’s operations. El Campín will continue to host professional football matches, concerts, and major events throughout the construction period. Initial works will focus on the eastern side of the site, allowing the stadium to remain fully functional. Only after the new stadium is completed will the historic El Campín be demolished. This approach ensures continuity in Bogotá’s sports and cultural calendar, which is crucial for both residents and the city’s economy.

A first-of-its-kind stadium in Colombia
In its initial phase, the new stadium will offer seating for more than 50,000 spectators. For concerts and large-scale events, flexible configurations of the stands and pitch will allow capacity to increase to approximately 70,000 attendees. This will make the new El Campín one of the largest and most versatile venues in Colombia, capable of hosting international-level events.
The project features advanced, cutting-edge technology. The stadium will be equipped with a top-quality hybrid pitch that meets FIFA standards and is used at Europe’s leading stadiums. One of the most distinctive elements will be a large-scale retractable roof — the first of its kind in Colombia. The roof will be integrated with a modern weather monitoring system, enabling real-time tracking of atmospheric conditions and rapid responses to weather changes, significantly improving safety and comfort during events.

More than a stadium – El Campín as a sports and entertainment hub
City authorities and IDRD stress that this is not solely a sports project. The new El Campín is designed to function as a multifunctional entertainment hub, combining sport, music, culture, and commercial activity. The goal is to revitalize the surrounding area, attract tourists, and create a new public space that remains active beyond matchdays. The project aligns with Bogotá’s broader urban development strategy, which also includes major initiatives such as the construction of the metro system and the expansion of TransMilenio.

Tradition and commercialization: what about the stadium’s name?
One of the key topics in public debate is the naming of the new stadium. While officials have confirmed that the venue may adopt a commercial name as part of future sponsorship agreements, the city assures that the historical legacy of Nemesio Camacho will not be forgotten. The name of the donor of the land on which the original stadium was built in the 1930s is expected to be preserved in some form, underscoring the importance of tradition and historical memory within the project.

A symbol of a modern metropolis and a catalyst for growth
For Bogotá, the construction of the new El Campín represents far more than a stadium upgrade — it is an investment in the city’s international image. Authorities emphasize that the venue will meet the most stringent safety standards, including Colombia’s seismic regulations (NSR-10) and FIFA guidelines on sightlines and spectator comfort. As a result, the capital will gain a facility capable of hosting the world’s biggest sporting and cultural events without limitations.
As the start of construction draws closer, expectations among Bogotá’s residents continue to rise. The new Nemesio Camacho El Campín is set to become one of the most important symbols of a modern, dynamically developing metropolis — seamlessly combining sport, culture, and entertainment within a single, multifunctional complex.
