Green light after years of procedures

We have been waiting for this news for ten years. Today, the decisive services conference concluded positively, approving the project for the new stadium, Zedda emphasized.

The mayor explained that the process is now complete also in terms of environmental and landscape requirements, thanks to the authorizations obtained through the regional Provvedimento autorizzatorio unico—formerly the VIA environmental procedure. This means that the Stadio Cagliari project can now move into its operational phase.

The city is now awaiting the updated financial and economic plan to be submitted by Cagliari Calcio. Once the club sends the new PEF, we will be able to proceed with further formalities and prepare the international tender for awarding the concession for the construction and management of the new facility, Zedda announced. The club intends to provide the documentation, certified by UniCredit, before the end of the year.

A stadium for all of Sardinia

The approval marks the end of years of formal efforts and opens the door to one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the modern history of the city. The new venue, planned in the Sant’Elia district, will be much more than a football stadium. According to the current design, it will seat 30,000 spectators and include a 126-room hotel, a 2,000 m² conference center, a 4,000 m² spa, and a bar — all to be operated by private entities. The stadium will serve as a hub for concerts, shows, and major events, becoming a landmark for residents across Sardinia.

How much will the new stadium cost?

The investment cost has risen compared to the initial documentation from 2022. It is now estimated at around €187 million plus VAT, roughly €40 million more than originally planned. The distribution of financial contributions between the club, the region, and the city has yet to be defined. The possibility of drawing from a national government fund dedicated to stadium infrastructure development is also being considered.
