Icon of Mar del Plata before a major breakthrough

After almost half a century of existence, Estadio José María Minella is entering a crucial phase of its history. The iconic stadium, which for years has been the sporting calling card of Mar del Plata, will undergo a comprehensive modernization. The goal of the project is not only to refresh its worn‑out infrastructure but, above all, to create a multifunctional venue capable of once again attracting the biggest sporting and cultural events.

The stadium was opened in 1978 as one of the venues of the FIFA World Cup held in Argentina. From that moment on, it became the stage for many prestigious events, including national team matches, summer tournaments, youth World Cups and Pan American Games, as well as high‑profile concerts by international stars.

The venue is located in the western part of the Teodoro Bronzini municipal sports complex and was designed as an elliptical structure with stands, entrances and service areas arranged around it. At the time of its opening, it could hold more than 35,000 spectators, divided between various stands, which by the standards of that era made it one of the most important stadiums in the country.

City’s multifunctional heart

Minella’s strength has always been its versatility. In addition to the main pitch, the stadium offers event halls, a press room, a small cinema, gyms, dressing rooms and a car park for around 250 vehicles, which for decades allowed it to serve as a sports and cultural hub for the whole of Mar del Plata.

The planned redevelopment involves a deep transformation of the entire concept of the venue. The target capacity will be 31,000 seats, this time all seated, with fully refurbished stands and a new sector layout designed to improve the viewing experience for every spectator in the stadium.

New stands and premium areas

The project includes the construction of VIP boxes and extended premium zones intended to significantly raise the standard of service for spectators and increase the stadium’s attractiveness for major event organizers. Technology will play a key role in the new Minella. The stadium will receive state‑of‑the‑art LED lighting and new giant screens, improving both broadcast quality and in‑stadium show production.

The dressing rooms will also be modernized, with a new spatial layout and technological solutions that enhance the functionality of facilities for teams, coaching staff and technical crews. At the same time, the project covers the upgrade of the irrigation and drainage systems for the pitch, so that the playing surface maintains high quality throughout the year regardless of weather conditions.

Pedestrian routes and access roads will also be redesigned, which will improve safety, facilitate evacuation and increase the overall accessibility of the stadium for spectators. The authorities expect the renovated venue to become a strong driver for tourism and the local economy. It is estimated that the new Minella will be able to host between 30 and 40 sporting events per year, as well as numerous concerts and cultural shows.
