Multiple fronts of work underway
In April, ground preparation and infrastructure necessary for year-round turf maintenance started, and in recent days the first sections of natural grass were laid. The New Highmark Stadium will feature a SubAir system controlling soil moisture, aeration, and heating, along with specialized grow lights to support grass growth during harsh Buffalo winters.
Meanwhile, the lower bowl is taking shape, with roughly a third of the seats installed. Significant progress has also been made inside the stadium, including corridors and field-level suites.

Staying on track despite challenges
The project, with a total cost exceeding $2.1 billion, aims to preserve Buffalo football tradition in challenging weather. A partial roof will cover about 64% of seats, shielding fans from snow and wind while keeping the field open to natural conditions. The roof features hydronic snow-melting pipes, automated sensors, and a curved design to quickly remove precipitation.
Construction has had to recover from weather delays, crane accidents, and a damaged gas line, but the stadium is now roughly 75% complete. According to John Polka, Vice President of Stadium Development, the project remains on schedule for the July 2026 opening.
