Spain: “Sempre Mestalla” — plans unveiled for Valencia’s historic stadium renovation At the end of last week, the “Sempre Mestalla” conference was held at Colegio Guadalaviar, organized by the Libertad VCF association. The goal was to inform Valencia CF supporters about the possibilities of modernizing the Estadio Mestalla.

A second great deception?

The organization described the event as the debate we were denied, arguing that staying at the current ground was never seriously considered as an option. The first issue raised during the presentation was debt. According to Libertad, building the new Nou Mestalla would mean taking on more than €380 million in debt — a burden they claim could be avoided by remaining at Avinguda de Suècia. The group compared the new stadium project to the sale of the club to Peter Lim, calling it a second great deception. They also rejected the idea that building a new stadium is the only way to secure Valencia CF’s financial stability.

For Libertad, leaving Mestalla would mean taking away the last symbol of valencianismo: the stadium itself. The association also criticized the fact that Nou Mestalla would not generate immediate commercial income once completed. With our proposal, the club can start earning from day one, without going into debt, they said. Libertad added that the renovation of the existing stadium is legally feasible, as there has never been any ruling ordering Mestalla’s demolition.

What does the proposal include?

During the event, an engineering study was presented to analyze the feasibility of renovating Mestalla. According to the report, the current structure is already prepared for the installation of a roof. Closing the third ring of stands would raise the capacity to 65,000, while the 6,000 m² of existing commercial space — currently unused — could be reactivated to generate additional income. The plan also foresees another 8,000 m² of commercial area along Avinguda de Aragón.

The total renovation cost is estimated at €133.9 million — less than completing Nou Mestalla. Of that amount, €36.4 million would go toward structural reinforcement, €28.1 million to the new roof, €18.7 million to refurbish the façade, €17.5 million to modernize the interiors, and €12 million to update the stadium’s equipment and facilities.
