World: Montevideo favourite to host the Finalissima, but competition is fierce In March 2026, the next edition of the Finalissima – the prestigious clash between the Copa América and European champions – will take place. This time it’s Argentina versus Spain, two of today’s football powerhouses.

Although the exact date and stadium have not yet been confirmed, the match is scheduled for FIFA’s March window (23–31 March 2026). UEFA and CONMEBOL have announced that the host venue will be decided by the end of the year. Candidates include Wembley in London, Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and the United States with MetLife Stadium and SoFi Stadium – a symbolic prelude to the 2026 World Cup. However, Uruguay and the legendary Estadio Centenario in Montevideo are considered frontrunners.

A successor to a historic tournament

Finalissima was revived in 2022 as a continuation of the Artemio Franchi Cup – a competition held only twice: in 1985, when France beat Uruguay, and in 1993, when Argentina defeated Denmark on penalties, winning their last title with Diego Maradona on the pitch.

In the current format, in 2022 Argentina – South American champions – faced Euro 2020 winners Italy at Wembley. Albiceleste won 3–0 with goals from Lautaro Martínez, Ángel Di María and Paulo Dybala.
