USA: USC receives final approval for $350 million Williams-Brice Stadium renovations The University of South Carolina has received the final approval to move forward with extensive renovations at Williams-Brice Stadium, home to the South Carolina Gamecocks. The state’s financial oversight board, chaired by the governor, approved the university’s $350 million plan to upgrade student sections, locker rooms, concession areas, bathrooms, and expand luxury suites for premium ticket holders.

Funding and financial plan

The athletics department will issue bonds to finance the improvements, ensuring that student fees and tuition remain unaffected. The bonds are planned to be repaid over thirty years using additional revenue from premium seating, suites, and one-time bonuses from food sales and media contracts. Officials anticipate an increase in annual ticket revenue by $26 million by year two, reaching over $70 million by year thirty. The new suites are also expected to generate $210 million, with most funds raised in the first decade.

Expansion of premium seating

Students will see improvements in the north end zone, including air-conditioned club spaces, extra restrooms, and enhanced concession areas. Student-athletes will benefit from upgraded locker and training rooms. The Williams-Brice Stadium may also receive two new video boards at the south end to enhance the fan experience.

A key element of the renovation is expanding premium seating from 18 suites to 43, including 33 traditional suites and 10 luxury “founder” suites. In addition, nine club areas, including one at field level, will be introduced. These additions aim to meet growing fan demand while supporting bond repayment. Construction is set to begin in December 2025 and is expected to conclude by August 2028. The renovated stadium will have a slightly reduced capacity of approximately 73,000, a decrease of 4,500 seats, which may reduce revenue by $9 million from those seats.

Student fees and contributions

Students already contribute through a $52 per semester special fee for athletics access, generating roughly $2.1 million annually. A new $300 annual “auxiliary” athletics fee, introduced in 2025, covers event operating costs, in-game promotions, facility upgrades, and additional health and safety staffing, potentially generating over $11 million per year. While this new fee enhances student experiences, it does not fund stadium construction. The athletics department is also still paying off $153 million from past projects.
