Extreme heat, closed roof, Orange hand fans…

In the four matches this season (Osasuna, Mallorca, Marseille and Espanyol) the roof of the Santiago Bernabéu has remained closed. Already in the first three matches, played at night, complaints about the heat arose, but this Sunday, in the clash with Espanyol, the straw broke the camel's back.

This time the players took to the pitch at 16:15 in full sun and with the roof once again closed, a combination that made the heat unbearable. The only thing that eased the situation were the Orange advertising hand fans placed on the seats for the general public. Real Madrid didn’t find a better solution to alleviate the scorching heat in the VIP boxes, where hostesses were handing out hand fans as well.

Ceiling damage, improved acoustics or soundproofing?

Some fans began to speculate whether the roof is broken, but this theory was quickly dismantled by photos from the Bernabéu Tour published by tourists this month, as in several images the roof remains open. The reason for keeping it closed could be to improve acoustics and atmosphere or to prevent noise being heard outside the stadium.

It is also possible that soundproofing work on the stadium is contributing to the heat, as Madrid have been closing off the Skywalk with glass screens, which prevent noise, but also air flow, and the air conditioning system may be insufficient or not yet installed. At the moment, Real Madrid has not explained why it has decided to keep the roof closed.
