Australia: Allianz Stadium to undergo major repairs just three years after opening Allianz Stadium in Sydney, which cost AUD 870 million to build, will undergo a comprehensive repair project despite being in use for only three years. During this period, Sydney FC and other teams using the stadium will need to relocate their matches and training sessions to alternative venues.

Full turf replacement required

Inspections revealed that the pitch fails to drain water properly, causing flooding during heavy rainfall. The surface often resembled a swamp, significantly hampering play. Clint Gutherson from the St George Illawarra Dragons described it as probably one of the worst pitches I’ve played on in a long time.

Venues NSW experts found that the drainage sand layer installed during construction is contaminated with clay and fine silt. As a result, the drainage capacity is only 40 mm per hour instead of the intended 300–600 mm/hour, preventing proper water flow. Consequently, the entire turf will be replaced. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns assured that taxpayers would not bear the cost: The pitch is still under warranty, so we expect the contractor to fix it.

Compensation for affected clubs?

Repairs will begin on September 13 and are expected to last about 10 weeks, ensuring the stadium is ready for concerts scheduled in December. The new pitch will be installed before Sydney FC’s first A-League 2025/26 season matches, starting on October 17.

Premier Minns emphasized that the goal is for Allianz Stadium to be exemplary not only for spectators but also for players. During the repairs, teams using the stadium, including Sydney FC and the Waratahs, will likely use alternative venues in Moore Park, CommBank Stadium in Parramatta, or Leichhardt Oval, and may seek compensation.
