Coventry City has finalized the purchase of its stadium – the Coventry Building Society Arena – from Frasers Group. The club described the event as a landmark moment in its history. The chairman and owner of the “Sky Blues,” Doug King, emphasized that the acquisition of the ground means securing the future of Coventry City not only for the present but also for future generations.

The end of years of uncertainty
The announcement coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Coventry Building Society Arena’s opening. The Championship club stressed that the new ownership guarantees long-term stability while enabling investment in infrastructure, fan experience, and community initiatives.
The road to this moment was long and difficult. Since leaving Highfield Road in 2005, Coventry City has had four stadium owners, four different home
grounds, three club owners, and countless protests. Now, however, the venue originally built for the Sky Blues
once again belongs to them – including the hotel and casino housed within the complex. The amount paid to Frasers Group has not been disclosed. It is known, however, that in 2022 the stadium was sold for £17 million to businessman Mike Ashley. At that time, King had offered £25 million, but the court deemed his bid too late.
Reactions and outlook
I feel immense pride and joy. This is the first time in 20 years that we can say we truly have a home,
said King. Fans and former players echoed the sentiment. Mark Smith, host of the podcast All Things Sky Blue, called the transaction monumental and expressed hope that the club would attract better players and return to the Premier League. Former player Garry Thompson added that greater revenue from the stadium opens up entirely new opportunities. The joy was also evident among supporters at the match, including Sandra and Nick Coleman, who admitted that the purchase eliminates uncertainty and allows them to believe the club is firmly on the right path.
A symbolic match
The announcement came on a day significant for sporting reasons as well. Coventry City hosted Queens Park Rangers – the very same team that played the first-ever match at the stadium in 2005. This time the hosts celebrated in style, thrashing their opponents 7–1, marking not only the anniversary but also the beginning of a new era of ownership and ambition.
