USA: More modern and digital - Levi’s Stadium debuts after $200M renovation The Mexico vs. Honduras match of the CONCACAF Gold Cup saw the debut of the modernized Levi’s Stadium, almost ready for the Super Bowl and the 2026 World Cup. The most important feature are the new videoboards - the biggest in the NFL - but many other changes were made.

49ers pour $200M to prepare Levi’s for 2026

The 60th edition of the Super Bowl and six games of the World Cup await Levi’s Stadium in 2026. To prepare the venue for these features, the San Francisco 49ers announced last year a modernization worth $200M, even though the stadium was opened just 11 years ago. Some results of the works are already visible.

The first ones to see them were the 70,975 fans that gathered on the stands to watch the Mexico vs. Honduras (1:0) clash in the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals on Wednesday night. The biggest change was, of course, the new videoboards that replaced the old ones on both endzones. They are - as 49ers president Al Guido assured - the two largest scoreboards in terms of total square footage in the NFL. According to NBC, along with the sound system they cost $70M.

“Everything is new, to the seats in the building”

The remaining $130M were also invested in brand-new technology: LED’s, better wifi and new lighting system. However, that’s not all. Guido assured in April in an interview on the Youtube channel of David Lombardi in August, what you’re going to see, is for the most part, almost a new building.

Among other improvements the president named new fan zones and contention stands, but even the VIP suites, food and beverage services and the pitch will have undergone changes by the end of the summer. Everything to the seats in the building are brand new – stated Guido.

One thing that is missing from the renovation is a roof, which many fans hoped for until it was announced in 2018 that it couldn’t be added due to the proximity of the San Jose airport.
