Málaga CF has issued an official statement responding to reports that the Ciudad de Málaga athletics stadium, to be used temporarily during the redevelopment of La Rosaleda for the 2030 World Cup, will only accommodate 12,500 spectators.

Redevelopment? Yes, but not at any cost
Since the City Council and the Provincial Council are among the club’s main sponsors and co-owners of the stadium, the club’s tone is not confrontational, but it does express serious concern and clearly outlines its position.
Málaga CF argues that such a scenario could result in significant losses — financially, athletically, and above all, socially. The unconditional support of our fans was key to the club’s survival during a difficult period marked by an ongoing legal process and lack of private investment. Málaga CF is currently self-financed, and our most valuable asset is undoubtedly our fan community,
the statement reads.
The club emphasized it supports the modernization of La Rosaleda — but not at any cost. According to Málaga CF, the transformation must be carried out with the utmost care, without endangering the club’s financial stability or depriving season ticket holders of their right to accompany the team through this new chapter.

Why was this solution chosen?
Many fans question why the Estadio Ciudad de Málaga was chosen over a modular alternative, like the solution adopted by Real Zaragoza. City officials explain that Ciudad de Málaga was selected for practical reasons — approximately 70% of the necessary infrastructure is already in place. This includes VAR technology, video surveillance, safety zones, and technical facilities. The required upgrades will mostly involve adapting locker rooms and expanding areas around the stands. The club shop is also expected to be relocated to the temporary stadium.
Authorities assure that the La Rosaleda redevelopment remains on schedule. The first ring of stands will be preserved, with reconstruction continuing from the second tier upwards. The project is considered large-scale and of strategic importance to the city.
