Spain: Question of priorities before Riazor’s redevelopment for 2030 World Cup The project to renovate Riazor Stadium, aimed at preparing the venue to serve as one of the host sites for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, continues to attract attention in A Coruña. Gonzalo Castro, the city councillor in charge of the process, stated that while no specific announcement date has been set, decisions are expected to be made soon.

Several options under review – the best one will be chosen

According to Castro, various models are being analysed, and the final choice will be the one that delivers the greatest benefit to the city. Details regarding timelines, the involvement of private partners, and their contributions will be made public once the project is finalised. Officials stress that Riazor, as the city’s main sports venue, holds the potential to generate significant value, with return on investment for the city currently being the central issue.

Castro also highlighted that such sensitive negotiations require discretion, as media noise or misunderstandings could jeopardise the process. Multiple proposals are being considered, each with its own strengths and limitations. The aim is to select the model that offers the highest value before initiating legal and administrative procedures.

A venue alive all year round?

The redevelopment of Riazor is closely linked to its financing model. The final design will depend on the adopted business approach and how the stadium will be used. Therefore, determining the future role of Riazor and its benefits to local residents is essential. While Real Club Deportivo and its football matches will remain the stadium’s primary tenants, Castro noted that matches take place on only 20 to 25 days a year. Given its scale, location and importance, the venue should serve a broader role – offering more events and greater value to the city year-round.
