Feasibility study to be prepared soon
Season ticket sales for Widzew Łódź’s home matches in the 2025/2026 season began on June 19, first allowing current holders to renew their subscriptions. Sales for new fans opened at noon on July 7, and the available pool—just 114 seats in stands A and B—sold out within minutes. The club quickly announced it on social media: You needed just a few seconds,
they wrote.
Such strong interest reignited discussions about the stadium’s insufficient capacity. According to the Widzew To My portal, efforts are currently underway to launch the expansion process. JSK Architekci Sp. z o.o. has been working on a preliminary concept for several weeks. This summer, a contract is expected to be signed to carry out a feasibility study along with visualizations, which will serve as a basis for further investment decisions.

What about the city?
Carrying out the expansion requires full cooperation with Łódź city authorities—mainly regarding funding the entire project. According to Widzew To My, one option being considered is proposing a lease of the stadium land for 20 to 29 years. The club also wants to take over stadium operations from the Municipal Arena of Culture and Sports, which would allow it to manage all infrastructure and fully control the venue’s development. Decisions on this are expected by the end of 2025.
President and architect speak out
In an interview with Łódzki Sport, Widzew’s president Michał Rydz emphasized the club’s goal to increase stadium capacity to 28,000 seats. This number is seen as optimal and the maximum achievable at the current location on al. Piłsudskiego. There was also an idea of building a new stadium in the Henryków district, but such a large investment would involve enormous costs.
The architect of the current Widzew stadium, Jacek Ferdzyn, also commented. Though a few years ago he ruled out expansion, he now presents three possible modernization scenarios. He points out that phased stadium expansions are common in many countries—especially in England. According to Ferdzyn, with the current structure, it would be possible to add two extra rows by cantilevering, though this would not significantly increase capacity.
Three possible expansion variants
The first realistic option involves taking over 10–15 meters of land on the side of stands B, C, and D and constructing a separate structure with independent staircases. In this case, the roof would have to be dismantled and replaced with a new one.
The second option proposes expanding only stand C, potentially increasing capacity to around 30,000. The third possibility is an asymmetrical expansion of stands B, C, and D—stands B and D would be extended by 10 rows, while stand C could gain 15–20 rows. None of these variants involve touching stand A, as it houses many key installations. By expanding C, VIP boxes could also be added there,
explains Ferdzyn.
Costs and challenges
Although there are plenty of concepts and options, the architect reminds that all come with high costs. He estimates the total expansion could cost between 180 and 200 million PLN. It’s a large amount but still significantly less than building a completely new stadium. It’s also important to remember that the works would require fans to temporarily leave the Heart of Łódź.
