At the end of February 2024, Oxford United submitted a planning application to Cherwell District Council to build a new 16,000-seat stadium at a site known as The Triangle, just south of Kidlington Roundabout.

Planning report nears completion
The club has confirmed that the council’s planning department is finalising its report on the proposal. The application is scheduled to be reviewed by the planning committee on 31 July. In a statement, the club said: Following the latest review, the club continues to work with the council’s team to secure a positive recommendation for the development plans.
Oxford United’s Development Director, Jonathon Clarke, noted that the club’s responses to official feedback are nearly complete, allowing focus to shift toward securing approval. He emphasised the importance of the July meeting for keeping the project timeline – and the club’s future – on track. Of course, English fans follow every little update about their own club, but many of them also turn their attention to alternative entertainment, and one of the most popular choices is definitely online casino games.

Environmental review underway
Cherwell Council has launched a public consultation, covering an updated biodiversity assessment and ecological response. New supporting documents have also been submitted, including an updated Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA), community benefits summary, and revised planning statement.
Further environmental information is still expected. Once received, it will be subject to an additional 30-day public consultation in line with legal requirements. All documents will be made available via the council’s dedicated planning website.
Stadium lease extended – but time is ticking
Last month, Oxford United and Kassam Stadium owner Firoka signed a short-term lease extension, allowing the club to stay at its current home for up to two more seasons. The existing lease was set to expire on 30 June 2025. The extension includes an option for a second year, conditional on the club receiving planning approval for the new stadium at The Triangle. No further extensions will be possible after this period.

What will the new stadium be like?
Designed by the renowned AFL Architects, the proposed venue features a modern, minimalist design that fits seamlessly into the area between Frieze Way, Oxford Parkway, and Kidlington Roundabout. The development includes a pitch, 180-room hotel, restaurant, conference centre, wellbeing and fitness facilities, and green spaces aimed at boosting biodiversity by at least 10%. The Oxford United New Stadium is set to become the UK’s first fully electric stadium, powered by solar panels and energy recovery systems. It will meet carbon neutrality standards and follow sustainable operating principles.
Accessibility and transport integration are also central to the design. The stadium will be connected to Oxford Parkway via a pedestrian and cycle link, with park & ride facilities, enhanced bus access, and extensive cycling infrastructure – enabling 90% of fans to attend without using a car. The stadium will be fully accessible, with sensory areas, wheelchair spaces, and raised platforms for people with limited mobility.
