Spain: Changes in La Rosaleda project in Malaga

The new La Rosaleda will look different from the version presented in April 2024. The evolution of the project has led technicians to revise a number of elements previously considered essential. The most significant change affects the northern part of the stadium, which was originally planned to undergo a complete transformation.

Modifications in the stadium expansion
According to 101TV, a decision has been made not to demolish the IES Guadalmedina institute. It is worth noting that this document remains subject to changes, although all signs suggest that this decision might be final.
It has been confirmed that Estadio La Rosaleda will be expanded laterally, through the Tribuna and Preferencia stands. The most notable change in the project will be the narrowing of Avenida de La Palmilla. The road will be reduced to one lane in each direction (the lanes closest to IES Rosaleda), making room for the foundations of a new stand. This structure will add 15,000 seats and will be entirely covered, increasing the stadium’s capacity to 45,000 spectators.
The Preferencia area (near the Guadalmedina River) will be completely redeveloped. The construction of plaza-like bridges over the riverbed is planned, a concept strongly supported by Mayor Francisco de la Torre. The structure will extend significantly eastward, although, as technicians emphasize, there will be no need to cover the river as previously considered. This is a key point for creating additional access and evacuation routes, in line with FIFA requirements for World Cup venues.
Two fan zones to be created
One of the goals of the institutions involved in the project of Estadio La Rosaleda is to create a recreational area on the northern side of the stadium. Although the school (IES Guadalmedina) will remain, the removal of the Anexo pitch opens up space for fans who previously used the narrow riverside path as an access point. Currently, all pre-match and hospitality activities are concentrated on the south side, where bars and restaurants are located. After the renovation, the stadium will feature two main fan areas—north and south. The plan includes new retail establishments and a dedicated fan zone
in the north.
What about transport and parking?
There are also considerations for a shuttle bus area, although no final decision has been made. A likely location would be the vicinity of Calle Massenet. Additionally, a new car park could be created to the north of the stadium, possibly along Avenida Jane Bowles, which may accommodate the majority of new parking spaces. However, these elements remain under review—the priority is to finish the work before 2030.
