In the 2024/25 season, the German Bundesliga once again confirmed its status as one of the most spectacular and well-attended football leagues in Europe. Across all 306 matches played by the eighteen clubs, a total of 11,830,600 spectators attended, resulting in an average attendance of 38,662 fans per match.

No surprises at the top
The promoted teams were FC St. Pauli (returning to the Bundesliga after 13 years) and Holstein Kiel (making their debut). Bayer 04 Leverkusen, last season’s champions, officially lost the chance to defend their title in Matchday 32 after a 2–2 draw with SC Freiburg. The new champions were Bayern Munich, securing their 34th German championship in history.
Borussia Dortmund recorded the highest average attendance, with their legendary Signal Iduna Park filled to 100% capacity at nearly 81,365 spectators per match. They were followed by Bayern Munich, whose Allianz Arena hosted an average of 75,000 fans, reflecting the Bavarian club’s dominance both on the field and in the stands. VfB Stuttgart ranked third with an average of 59,265 fans at MHPArena Stuttgart.
Smaller doesn't mean worse
The lowest attendance was at Holstein-Stadion, with an average of just 14,893 spectators, about 99% of its capacity, which still yielded the lowest total figure due to the stadium’s small size.
It is noteworthy that even clubs at the lower end of the attendance table reached nearly full capacity at their home matches, proving that in Germany, fans prefer going to the stadium—even small ones—over watching games on TV. The average stadium occupancy rate was an impressive 95.9%, with fifteen of the eighteen clubs surpassing 92% capacity.
What about ticket prices?
The Bundesliga has long been known for its fan-friendly approach, demonstrated not only by record attendance but also by affordable ticket pricing. In the 2024/25 season, season tickets for standing sections remained relatively inexpensive, especially compared to other major European leagues. For example, a season pass at FC Augsburg cost €219 (up €20 from the previous year), at Union Berlin €221 (unchanged), and at Werder Bremen €222 (also up €20). Fans of Borussia Mönchengladbach paid €230 (up €40), SC Freiburg €235 (up €10), and the highest price was at VfB Stuttgart – €240 (up €12.50). An interesting measure introduced by Borussia Mönchengladbach was requiring fans to use their season ticket for at least 12 out of 17 home games to retain renewal rights, aiming to reduce artificial occupancy and increase real attendance.
